Bout of Books 8!

Hey everyone! I've been amiss at writing for a lot of excuses I could lob at you, but honestly it just boils down to this: I've been too lazy to write blog entries. And isn't that always the case?

I heard about something on YouTube, though, that I would really like to use to create change here. After blogging A-Z I thought it would be easy to keep up momentum, but when is it ever? So let's see what I can do in August to make up for the dearth of posts May-July!

Bout of Books

I will be participating in the 8th edition of the Bout of Books read-a-thon! To put it simply:
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 19th and runs through Sunday, August 25th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 8.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team
A lot of people seem to use Bout of Books as an excuse to piledrive through a large stack of books in the "to read" pile. And while I think that's a good idea, I just don't have it in me to do that. I read books to savor them, to appreciate them, and the notion of speeding through it makes me a bit sad. So my Bout of Books will be a bit different:

I will be reading. Full stop. Why are you saying that, Patricia!? you might ask. Well, it's because I don't. Plain and simple. If I have an hour of spare time, I'm liable to be on the Internet or playing with my 3DS. On a lunch break, I sit at my desk and read. I simply don't pick up the book I have on hand any more. My goal for Bout of Books is to actually read. To not turn to screen time if I get bored, but to actually do something that enriches my brain. To go outside and eat lunch at a picnic table, read a book, get some sunlight.

So, that's my goal! Simple at its core, but actually pretty difficult! If you'd like to see what I'll be reading, stay tuned! I'll know closer to the 19th what my starting book will be.

Anybody want to join me on this quest? It doesn't have to be able reading a ton of books, it's about effort!

  1. Hallo, Hallo Ms. Patricia!

Bout of Books 8.0 is my first-ever Bout!! And, although I might look crazy attempting to read 10 books in a week,... it's due to the fact, that I have attempted to get into these particular books/authors for at least *four!* years, and I am determined to set a high bar for myself if only to accomplish what I clearly have failed to do in the past!

A bit like what you said, life interferes or you get distracted or 'something!'!! Not that I am going to plow through at a manic speed where light years whip past me like hyperspace travel is out of style, no! I want to soak into these novels, dip into their narratives to where they wash over me like a waterfall!

We have similiar like-minded goals, and so, I am going to follow your progress! I am clicking over to the blogs of 8.0 to see which stops I want to make {ever the prepared girl!},... I am thankful I came across your post!

And, my both of us accomplish what we are setting out to do! As I think you said it best: the distractions of life circumvent your passions, and sometimes you have to pull back and say, "No! I need to read!"

    Happy New Beginning!

  2. Hey! This is my first ever blog based read-a-thon too. My blog has been incredibly hit and miss over, well, over the whole time I have had it and I really want to get better at it! I've been watching youtube too (who are your favourite booktubers?) and heard about BoB over there, so thought it might kick start some action. I look forward to your updates. Happy Reading :)

  3. That goal is beautiful. And gets to the root or why we all love books. I am bad to watch TV or surf the web. It is mindless.

    Good luck with reading more!

  4. Like you, I'm doing bout of books and just plan on reading. Although I already read quite a bit, there are times when I watch tv instead of reading and this week I plan on changing that. But I'm not too concerned about specific goals and expect this to be a fun, laid back challenge :)

  5. Point well taken. I agree that books should be savored. I do that for the most part, unless they are my fluff reads, such as cozies. Enjoy your reading.
