Bout of Books 12.0

Bout of Books

Hey there, bookish geeks! I have been very lackadaisical in my updating of this thing recently, but honestly I pay real dollars for it each year and I would really like to see it go somewhere!

I was thinking this while scrolling through my YouTube subscriptions, and discovered that - joy of joys - a new Bout of Books is coming up later this holiday season! Best yet, it's not during anything really pressing at work, how perfect is that? It's actually the one week with no commitments! The next week, on the other hand - but that won't taint BoB!

In case you're not on the fabulous gravy train that is Bout of Books, let's let the inventors of BoB tell you in their own words what it is:
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 5th and runs through Sunday, January 11th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 12 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

So you might be wondering, while you sit there eating your microwave lunch as I am right now ... well, what are the goals? This is where people vary wildly. Some people read a book a day and aim to read 7 books - some people aim even higher and go for 10! Some people are happy to just read 1. But me, I play the BoB game a little bit differently, and here's why:

We spend all our lives on screens. We work on screens, we play on screens at home, and we rely on our pocket-sized screens to buoy us from screen to screen - we can't even walk from our work-screen to our home-screen without whipping out another screen to keep us satiated and amused between the two! And while the cell phone has so many incredible uses, it also does this to us and that really, frankly, sucks.

So to me, BoB is less about powering through 4 books in 7 days, it's about disconnecting from those screens. I have to rely on them at work, sure, but at home? In the bathtub? On my lunch break? A book - an honest-to-god glue-and-paper book - is so much better and mentally stimulating. It helps your brain reboot, helps your anxious mind calm down and still and sync up with something unrelated to your daily life.

My BoB 12.0 goal? To read more, full-stop. I don't care how many pages or books it is, I just care that I'm reading. On a purely superficial goal, I guess it would be nice to read 300 pages, but I won't hold my breath or be angry at myself if I don't achieve that. I just want to achieve anything at all!
